I've seen the 'check transmission,see handbook' error before but it was never became an issue until yesterday night when the car refused to engage gear in the middle of the road. After several attempts of restarting failed I gave up and called my breakdown service. To check the transmission fluid level in your Fiat 500L, start the engine and let it idle for a few minutes. Then, check the transmission fluid level using the dipstick located near the transmission. The fluid should be at the "Full" mark on the dipstick. See attached Pic for the various fill & drain plugs for the 3.0 ltr 6 Speed, both manual & Comfortmatic transmissions as they are the same transmission other than the gearshift & clutch controls. Sorry the picture is not that clear! According to the manual it takes 2.91 litres but I would check that to be sure & do not overfill. Cheers
